Chapter 1 An Ordinary Day in the Rainy City

Chapter 1 An Ordinary Day in the Rainy City

Good morning, residents of the rainy city! Today's weather is light rain turning sunny, so remember to bring your umbrella when you go out this morning!

"It's been half a month since the collapse of the Iron Cape Bridge. Hopefully, the rare sunshine will bring some comfort... In this disaster, thousands of innocent Utah citizens fell into the sea..."

"Rumors are circulating that an Alpha-level anomalous entity's intersection with reality caused this disaster... Okay, I admit that conspiracy theory is quite tempting, Jason, what do you think?"

"If it were me, I wouldn't worry about the threat of anomalous entities. Our superheroes have protected Yudu very well, haven't they?"

"Of course, 'Optimus Prime' arrived at the scene 1 minute and 25 seconds after the disaster occurred, and according to subsequent statistics, he saved at least 500 people..."

On the old-fashioned television screen, a huge poster occupied half of the studio screen.

He was a burly man over two meters tall, with most of his skin covered by gray iron armor, except for his marble-like abs and the lower half of his face.

"As a gamma-level demigod, 'Optimus Prime' has been making quite a splash lately. Regarding this, a Foundation spokesperson said... *sizzle*..."

The television screen flickered with static, and the picture became intermittent.

Beside the coffee table in front of the television, Lin Chen stared intently at the flickering face of "Qingtian" on the screen, his lips trembling almost imperceptibly.

Demigods, the superheroes of Rain City, the guardians of human civilization.

In this extraordinary city, people offer them flowers and write hymns in their honor.

But Lin Chen had seen their true colors.

He was there the day the bridge collapsed.

"Click...click...click..."

Using the dim light from the television screen, Lin Chen was loading bullets one by one into the cylinder of a revolver shotgun.

One block, one turn.

"Click...click...click..."

A spokesperson for the foundation stated that the "Optimus Prime" awards ceremony will be held at Iron Point Plaza at 3:30 PM today...

"Let's step into the sunshine after the rain and cheer for the great hero 'Optimus Prime'!"

"Click!"

With all seven bullets loaded, Lin Chen reset the magazine and stood up.

"3:30 PM, Iron Corner Square."

Lin Chen muttered softly, a cold glint flashing in his eyes.

Today, he is going to kill the man everyone considers a hero.

He wanted to assassinate a demigod.

......

Lin Chen never imagined he would end up like this.

Two years ago, he was a recent college graduate, and like countless other young people, he chose Chongqing as his place to make his way in the world.

For two years, he struggled to make ends meet by looking for a job and delivering food to pay his rent.

If he hadn't met such a kind landlord, he might have frozen to death on the street long ago.

But all of this was destroyed half a month ago.

"..."

After loading the bullets, Lin Chen hid the gun under the mattress, then got up and left the house.

Looking out from the terrace at the edge of the corridor, the circular atrium breathes in the morning mist, and wisps of smoke rise from the central plaza on the 85th floor, passing through the concentric corridors and dispersing in the light of the drizzling rain.

This skyscraper residential building is located on the outer ring of Yudu and is a gathering place for job seekers from outside the city like Lin Chen and middle-level white-collar workers in Yudu.

The advantage is that the rent is cheap, but the disadvantage is that the security is slightly worse.

Lin descended three levels and arrived at the central plaza, dodging the passing crowds.

On the way, he overheard people talking:

"Qingtian's recent marketing campaigns have once again driven the foundation's stock to its daily limit; it's a bit abnormal..."

"That was a cross-sea bridge... and it just collapsed like that... United Concrete claimed to have invested hundreds of billions when they built it!"

"Their boss has already been arrested; this will really squeeze the foundation dry..."

"..."

Lin Chen pulled up his hood, quickened his pace, and soon reached the edge of the central square, where he found his usual restaurant.

It's called a shop, but it's really just a small stall with seats set up in the central courtyard. It mainly serves simple breakfasts.

"Two 'Hardcore Meal' orders," he said to the shopkeeper, taking out his phone and scanning a QR code.

"Okay, let's find a seat."

Lin Chen found a seat on the side and sat down. While waiting, he turned his head without making a sound and looked out through the openwork structure of the building.

The magnificent gray metropolis stands in the rain, stretching all the way to the cloud-stained skyline, with white mist swirling around the outlines of the megastructures, making them appear ethereal and unreal.

Rain City, the city of gods.

When Lin Chen was born, Yudu was still called Yuzhen, just an ordinary coastal town with few tourists.

Until a shooting star fell into the sea, forever changing the fate of this small town.

The meteor brought forth beings called "demigods," each possessing extraordinary abilities, much like superheroes in movies.

With the demigods settling peacefully in Raintown, the entire world flocked to the area: scientific delegations from various countries, a massive influx of tourists, and the resulting surge in demand led to a surge in business development...

Gradually, the capital that cooperated with the demigods coalesced under some force, forming a massive organization—

foundation.

In Rain City, the Foundation manages demigods, and its power hangs over governments and multinational corporations like a dark cloud.

The thought of facing such a colossal being made Lin Chen chuckle softly.

He surveyed the intercity traffic and muttered to himself:

"No traffic control? The foundation is really at ease."

"Traffic control? Is the Rain City's top rider returning to the streets?"

Lin Chen turned his head and saw the breakfast shop owner carrying two plastic bags, which he placed on the table in front of him.

Lin Chen didn't know his name, only that he called himself "Mouse".

"Are you preparing to resume work?"

"Yes," Lin Chen nodded, "I took on a crowdsourcing order from the foundation this afternoon."

"Not bad, not bad. Young people shouldn't let setbacks defeat them."

Mouse patted Lin Chen on the shoulder, then took out a plastic bag from his pocket and handed it to Lin Chen.

Lin Chen looked down and saw two steamed buns wrapped in a plastic bag.

"You should eat more too, take care of yourself," Mouse said. "How's your landlady's daughter?"

"It's alright," Lin Chen said.

Seeing Lin Chen's appearance, Haozi patted his shoulder forcefully:

"The foundation is cracking down hard lately, so don't say anything carelessly online. The other day, someone in the next group was discussing conspiracy theories, and it all came to light offline..."

"Don't worry, Brother Hao, I definitely won't say anything carelessly online."

Lin Chen picked up the plastic bag, stood up, and bowed to the chef.

"Thank you for taking care of me all this time, Brother Hao."

"Hey, what are you doing?" Mouse patted Lin Chen's arm. "Stand up straight, understand? If you're really broke, come to me. I'll feed you white flour buns until you're full."

"must."

After watching Hao Ge leave, Lin Chen turned around, carried the breakfast through the courtyard, and went upstairs.

After reaching the third floor, he didn't go into his own apartment, but instead went to the door next door and knocked three times.

"Huihui, it's me, your brother is back."

The door opened quickly, and Lin Chen looked down: a little girl in pajamas was looking up at him, her eyes red.

"Brother," she said softly.

"I brought you lunch," Lin Chen said, raising his hand and shaking the plastic bag. "Here, it's still warm. Go wait at the table."

"it is good."

The little girl walked towards the dining table in a daze. Lin Chen closed the door and turned to look at the shoe cabinet next to the door.

On the cabinet, two portraits stood: one of a young couple, smiling and elegant.

Those were Huihui's parents, who were also Lin Chen's landlords.

They died in the collapse of Iron Point Bridge.

The Foundation's demigod "Skybreaker" was the murderer who killed them.
