Chapter 714 - 685: Love in a Parallel Universe [007]
Before the end of the workday, Lawyer Chandler urgently called Sienna Thorne away, saying he was worried about traffic at rush hour, and didn’t want to keep the client waiting.Sienna didn’t think much about it and took the materials she had prepared in the afternoon, following Lawyer Chandler downstairs.
At the parking garage, Lawyer Chandler slipped into the driver’s seat, and she bent down to knock on the passenger window.
Lawyer Chandler rolled down the window and impatiently asked, "What are you doing not getting in the car?"
"Mr. Chandler, where should I sit for convenience?"
"Sit wherever you want!"
Lawyer Chandler raised the window again.
Sienna was speechless and opened the rear door, sitting in the back seat.
Seeing her in the back seat, Lawyer Chandler was annoyed again, sarcastically asking, "Thorne, do you think I’m your driver?"
Sienna was about to explode!
She wanted to ask Lawyer Chandler, are you crazy? Didn’t you just tell me to sit anywhere?
But the newbie didn’t dare contradict the boss, so she just smiled and said, "No, because my dad told me the passenger seat is for the car owner’s wife, and shouldn’t be sat in casually."
Lawyer Chandler sneered, "What does your dad do? So particular?"
Sienna kept smiling, "My dad is also in the legal profession."
"Really? Which firm?"
Sienna chuckled awkwardly, "A small firm, you wouldn’t know it."
Lawyer Chandler sneered internally: Probably just a small-time lawyer who never made a name for himself, otherwise his daughter wouldn’t need to be a corporate grunt.
The car left the Vantage Parking Garage, heading towards The Imperial Hotel in the city center.
All the way, Sienna didn’t want to talk to Lawyer Chandler, feeling that this boss might have bipolar disorder, blowing up over nothing—better to avoid such people.
Lawyer Chandler also seemed uninterested in her, turning on the radio to listen to songs, occasionally humming along.
Half an hour later, they arrived at The Imperial Hotel. She took her briefcase and got out, following Lawyer Chandler into the elevator.
They went to a private dining room in the Chinese restaurant. Sienna noted the floor and room number and took out her phone to message Quentin Thorne on WeChat.
The client hadn’t arrived yet; the room was empty.
A large round table that could seat twenty was on one side, with a landscape painting screen on the other, seemingly with a hall behind the screen.
Lawyer Chandler found a seat at the big round table and impatiently beckoned her over.
She went over with her briefcase, sat next to Lawyer Chandler, and took out her materials to review.
Lawyer Chandler played with his phone, suddenly turning his head to ask, "What’s your relationship with Partner Reed?"
Sienna looked puzzled.
Lawyer Chandler suddenly gave a creepy smile, "He personally assigned this case to you. Let’s not mention you’re just a junior lawyer three months into the firm—Stellaron is one of the company’s key clients, and this case wouldn’t normally come to you."
Sienna’s smile stiffened.
Then don’t let me come if it’s not supposed to be me!
Damn it!
She wanted to curse.
But she held back, offering Lawyer Chandler a polite smile, "It was Partner Reed who interviewed me, that’s all."
"Really?"
"Yes!"
Lawyer Chandler gave a cold chuckle, said nothing, and turned back to his phone.
They sat in silence for a moment until someone pushed the door open and walked in.
Sienna hadn’t yet seen who it was when Lawyer Chandler sprang up swiftly, running over to nod and greet, "Mr. King, you’re here? Please come in, come in! Was there traffic on the way?"
"Not bad, not bad, you arrived so early?" Mr. King glanced inside, spotting Sienna standing behind Lawyer Chandler, smiled slightly, and scanned her delicate face.
That smile and gaze made Sienna feel very uncomfortable; she couldn’t muster a polite smile and only nodded slightly.
Mr. King was ushered to the main seat at the large round table by Lawyer Chandler, followed by several young men coming in.
They instinctively sat away from the main seat, leaving a place Sienna thought might be for someone important.
Just as she was thinking, Lawyer Chandler suddenly said, "Thorne, sit next to Mr. King so you can hear the case details clearly."
Sienna: ???
Am I deaf?
She politely laughed, "It’s okay, I can sit here and hear perfectly fine."
Lawyer Chandler immediately frowned, admonishing, "What’s wrong with you? Can’t even follow a simple instruction?"
Sienna, having never been scolded like this before, held back her grievance, sitting still, "I don’t think sitting here means I can’t hear Mr. King’s words clearly."
Lawyer Chandler’s face darkened, seemingly about to embarrass her when Mr. King suddenly stood up cheerfully, "No problem, no problem, I’ll sit next to Thorne."
He moved with his phone and cigarette pack, even pushing his chair closer to her.
She suddenly understood why Quentin Thorne insisted she send the private room number.
.
The group began eating, chatting nonsense, without discussing the case at all.
Throughout the meal, Mr. King kept trying to get Sienna to drink, but she cleverly dodged each attempt.
She didn’t dare touch any untouched dish nor drink from her glass.
She realized that being a lawyer involved client entertainment, dining with clients—no wonder Quentin Thorne kept advising her to apply to the prosecutor’s office.
She considered resigning again...
"Come on, Thorne, have a drink!" Mr. King leaned in again, coercing, "If you don’t drink, I won’t give you the case! If you can’t even manage social interactions, how can I trust you with the case?"
Lawyer Chandler joined in, "Thorne, just have a sip! If we lose this case because of you, how will you explain to the boss?"
That wine glass almost reached her lips, but she shoved it away in disgust, "I’m allergic to alcohol; if I drink, my windpipe could swell, and I’d suffocate!"
Mr. King laughed lightly, hand reaching toward her shoulder, "You little girl, don’t lie to me..."
She blushed red, unable to escape, when suddenly the room door was pushed open from outside.
Lawyer Chandler hurriedly stood, "Partner Reed, what brings you here?"
Sienna looked towards the entrance. Mr. King took the opportunity to put his hand on her shoulder.
Thomas Reed’s gaze swept over Mr. King’s arm on Sienna’s shoulder, then strode in.
Sienna stood up in response, nodding at him, "Partner Reed."
Thomas Reed stepped between her and Mr. King, discreetly pulling her aside, then extended his hand to Mr. King, laughing heartily, "Mr. King, it’s been a while! How come you’re dining with our Vantage lawyers tonight?"
Mr. King quickly noted Thomas Reed’s protective stance toward Sienna, his small eyes scanning her face with displeasure, but still feigned politeness, extending his hand to Thomas Reed, "Isn’t it about that recent case? I heard Thorne is handling it, so we met tonight."
